What are Novo Nordisk smart insulin pens?

NovoPen® 6 & NovoPen Echo® Plus are smart insulin pens that automatically record how much insulin someone takes and when they take it. Users can then transfer this data to a number of apps and devices able to connect with NovoPen® 6 & NovoPen Echo® Plus, allowing them to keep an automated dose log, and potentially allowing them to view their personal dose data alongside their blood sugar levels.

The smart insulin pens NovoPen® 6 and NovoPen Echo® Plus are mechanical durable injection devices with variable dose setting capabilities:

  • The NovoPen® 6 has a max. dose size setting of 60 IU with 1 IU increment resolution.
  • The NovoPen Echo® Plus has a max. dose size setting of 30.0 IU with a 0.5 IU increment resolution.
  • The drug cartridge can at any time be replaced by the patient/caregiver.

The built-in electronics can register the time of the injected dose and the dose size; these registrations are kept in a ‘dose log’ where the last 800 injections can be retrieved wirelessly, using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

NovoPen® 6 & NovoPen Echo® Plus are CE marked.
NovoPen® 6 & NovoPen Echo® Plus are currently not approved in the US.

What possibilities does this offer?

Despite the potential of today’s diabetes medicines, people with diabetes must constantly monitor their diet, exercise levels and medication.

Novo Nordisk believes that smart insulin pens will provide people with diabetes and their healthcare professionals with reliable insulin dose data that they can use to improve diabetes management. By using solutions that can connect with NovoPen® 6 & NovoPen Echo® Plus, doctors, nurses and people with diabetes could have access to both insulin dose data and sugar levels. This may help to create more productive, meaningful conversations between people with diabetes and their healthcare professionals.

We want people with diabetes, their doctors and nurses to have the freedom to choose the solutions that work best for them. That is why we are working to become part of a bigger solution, where different types of apps, devices or systems work together, to make things just a bit simpler for everyone.
