What are Novo Nordisk smart insulin pens?

NovoPen® 6 & NovoPen Echo® Plus are smart insulin pens that automatically record how much insulin someone takes and when they take it. Users can then transfer this data to a number of apps and devices able to connect with NovoPen® 6 & NovoPen Echo® Plus, allowing them to keep an automated dose log, and potentially allowing them to view their personal dose data alongside their blood sugar levels.

The smart insulin pens NovoPen® 6 and NovoPen Echo® Plus are mechanical durable injection devices with variable dose setting capabilities:
 

• The NovoPen® 6 has a max. dose size setting of 60 IU with 1 IU increment resolution.
• The NovoPen Echo® Plus has a max. dose size setting of 30.0 IU with a 0.5 IU increment resolution.
• The drug cartridge can at any time be replaced by the patient/caregiver.

The built-in electronics can register the time of the injected dose and the dose size; these registrations are kept in a ‘dose log’ where the last 800 injections can be retrieved wirelessly, using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

How do NovoPen® 6 & NovoPen Echo® Plus work?

When a user injects a dose, the NovoPen® 6 & NovoPen Echo® Plus record the following information:

• How many insulin units are taken
• The time and date of the injection
  
   

What are the specifications for NovoPen® 6 and NovoPen Echo® Plus?

• Compatible with all Novo Nordisk medicines sold in 3 ml Penfill® cartridges.
• Measurement and storage of last 800 ‘injection events’, with 60 IU max dose and 1 IU increments for NovoPen® 6 and 30 IU max dose and 0.5 IU increments for NovoPen Echo® Plus.
• It is estimated by Novo Nordisk that for someone using basal and bolus treatments, NovoPen® 6 and NovoPen Echo® Plus could store roughly 3 months of injection data. However, this is expected to vary from patient to patient, depending on injection frequency.
• NovoPen® 6 is available in silver and dark blue and NovoPen Echo® Plus comes in red and light blue. Colourful skins are available to help users personalise their pen.
• The NovoPen® 6 and NovoPen Echo® Plus can transfer dosing history wirelessly via Near Field Communication (NFC) e.g. to an app on a smartphone device.
• No battery exchange or recharge. Following removal of the insulin cartridge, NovoPen® 6 and NovoPen Echo® Plus can be disposed of as electronic waste once it is no longer in use.
